Samui Verticolor Koh Samui – A Review

The Samui Verticolor on Koh Samui is a relatively new hotel, just about a year old. Part of the Resotel Group International, it is a comfortable and chic property located on Chaweng beach, at the far end of the road from the main area of tourist interest.

True to its name, colours in all shades of the rainbow and then some, offset by a calming white as the main backdrop colour, make it stand out from among its competitors, to the extent that even the room numbers, key cards etc, are done up in different multi-coloured shades. At the entrance, just into the small lobby, there is a wall mural as it were, of variously hued plant pots and flowers.

The property is at a slight incline and about a three-minute walk from the main road, which guarantees it a measure of peace and quiet. The 22-metre long lap-pool is not part of the main building but is off to one side and before one accesses the hotel lobby entrance.

The Verticolor is a low-rise, five-storey building with 151-keys that are large enough and quite restful. The hotel is wi-fi equipped. There are four categories of rooms, namely: the Superior Studio offering a garden view; the Deluxe Studio which is much larger at 34sqm and offers a settee and a tiny balcony with views of either the sea or the garden; the Triple Studio which is ideal for families, and then the Suite Studio at 65 sqm which has a separate living room area and two bathrooms, one of which is equipped with a Jacuzzi. Bathrooms are provided with the usual amenities including hair dryers. All rooms come with mini bars, tea/coffee makers, TV’s, safety boxes and thoughtfully placed umbrellas. Two complimentary bottles of water are provided per day. Guests have the option of choosing fan or air-conditioned rooms; of course, the price for the former would be substantially lower. Prices are dependent on the season, so it’s best to check directly with the hotel.

F&B options include the aptly named Café Colore, the Lobby Lounge and the Poolside Bar. Apart from this, in-room dining is available from 1100-2200hours. Breakfast is a tad disappointing as it’s fairly basic.

Recreational facilities include the swimming pool, a gym, and an internet station in the lobby. A tour desk is available to help you chart out your itinerary as also book tickets for nearby islands and events such as the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan. The Room Divisions Manager is Khun Yacht who is most helpful and informed and can be approached to resolve any problem.

As mentioned earlier, the Verticolor is located on Chaweng, which is the most popular beach for tourists and the nightlife. Perhaps the location could be its only drawback, as it is situated at the far end of the road, which means it’s a good twenty minute walk to the main street. Unfortunately, the hotel does not offer a shuttle bus service and perhaps the management should consider providing this facility to its guests.

To get to the island, you can fly into Koh Samui directly however, bear in mind that Bangkok Airways holds the monopoly although there are some THAI Airways flights too flying in now. Ticket costs are at a premium. Another option by air is to fly into Surat Thani from Bangkok (about 70-minutes) with Air Asia or Nok Air (roughly THB1,500-2,000 one way) and then take a bus/ferry combination ticket for THB 350; multiple options available at the airport. You could also do the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani (roughly THB 760 but there are choices here too such as 1st, 2nd and 3rd class, fan or air conditioned, upper or lower berth) and then the bus/ferry combo. The trains are safe and comfortable. From Surat Thani to Koh Samui’s Nathon Pier it is about two-and-a-half hours, after which you can take a taxi or songtaew to whichever beach you’ve decided to stay on.
